Birch Hill on Palomar Mountain is named after Englishmen Henry Clarkson Birch and his younger brother Arthur Clarkson Birch, who lived there from 1891 to 1893. The Englishmen made such an impression on local residents that the hill where they lived became known as Birch Hill.
